Just Getting Airborne. Along the shores of Lake Pleasant, northwest of Phoenix, this great egret was probably in an early phase of its springtime migration during March, 2021. Many waterbirds stop to feed at Arizona lakes during their spring and fall migrations, and more than a few choose to spend the winter here, being ardent fans of free meals.
The white feathers on the bird's beak suggest that it had been preening just before takeoff.
