Ascending: Great Egret above Lake Pleasant, Arizona. Here’s another one of the many creatures that inhabit the shores of this desert lake northwest of Phoenix. Closely related to herons, they are predators and are experts at catching fish and other water creatures while wading in shallow water. They are found in most of the 48 contiguous US states; in winter months, they migrate south from states with colder weather.
